A friend recently returned from Hawaii reported seeing two Short-eared Owls engage in inflight talon grasping. I've seen reference to this as a courtship behaviour in Bald Eagles, but haven't ever seen this behaviour described as characteristic of Short-eared Owls. Anyone aware if this behaviour is common or was it an atypical encounter?
