As I was preparing to leave the house to bird with the
Cottets this morning, I received a call from a
homeowner in Mead who invited me up to see a Harris's
Sparrow that has been visiting their feeder.
Apparently, the bird shows has shown up intermittently
since February 6th.

Around 8:45 AM, the first year HARRIS'S SPARROW flew
into a crab apple tree and the landed in the tree with
the feeders. After that, it fed on the ground with a
few House Finches. We had wonderful views of the bird
for some ten minutes until it finally flew off to the
trees to the east. This was a Spokane County lifer for
me and a state lifer for the Harold and Karen.

Birders wishing to see the bird may contact Sherry &
Owen Burgess (509-466-0848; between 8:00AM-noon) to
make visiting arrangements. The Harris's Sparrow has
been seen mainly in the mornings.

New arrivals in the area included VESPER SPARROWS and
HOUSE WREN that were seen west of Spokane and
northeast of Airway Heights. Within a our half day of
birding, we saw quite a few mammals such as Mule Deer,
White-tailed Deer, Porcupine, Yellow-bellied Marmot,
Red Squirrel, and Yellow-Pine Chipmunk. Conditions
have been partly cloudy and quite cool (freezing to
mid 40's) with fog in Mead.
