Hi Anne and Tweeters:
I have a bunch of these Motorola FRS radios, and it seems like the model numbers constantly change every year. That being said, I have a couple of models that are the newer (last couple of years) smaller kind that I like. The volume knob is on the top, and it's easy to turn the volume up and down. They are T4900 and T5620. These two models are exactly the same as far as I can tell.
Unfortunately, these newer radios give you not only FRS frequency (the kind we birders like that transmits for 2 miles and doesn't require a licence), and GMRS frequency. GMRS frequency travels farther (so they say), but requires a licence. Don't bother using GMRS.
On these newer radios, FRS is only on channels 8-14. But each one of these 7 channels has 38 codes which means you still have the use of 266 frequencies. The birder's universal channel & code is 11, code 22.
On most FRS radios you can disable the roger beep by pressing in on the + botton while turning on the radio. Be sure to disable the roger beep. The packaging will not necessarily tell you that you can disable the roger beep. But all the Motorolas I have allowed me to do so, with the info inside the user's guide.

I want to get a couple of the rdios that you all use to communicate back and forth on. It seems like most use Motorola, but are there any preferred models?

Thanks,

Anne Kahle,
