Subject: [Tweeters] Painted Ladies on the move

Yesterday on the way home from work I noticed numerous Painted Ladies on
the wing, the first I'd witnessed of this year's big movement. They
seemed to be heading generally north, and they weren't slowing much -
making a bee-line, as it were. Most of them were looking pretty worn
and tattered at this point in their trip. At home, once the wind died,
they started lingering at our blooming madrone trees. During the big
migration in '92, by mid-May they were forming dense swarms around the
madrone blossoms - hundreds of butterflies at a single tree. It sounds
like this year's migration might be even bigger.
