Tweets - I managed to completely mangle a trip to Sequim to try for the
stint yesterday. Between missed ferries, traffic catastrophes, mis-timed
tides, etc., I managed to be at 3 Crabs both long before and long after any
self-respecting stint would have been there, but managed to miss the
appropriate times to check. I ended up spending far too long in my car, and
not enough time birding.

However, there were some birds to see:

There was a single SANDHILL CRANE, first seen around 4:30 p.m. and later
about 7:00 p.m. at the south end of Schmuck Rd., just north of the creek and
west of the road in a grassy field.

A lone PURPLE MARTIN flew over 3 Crabs while I had dinner. A PEREGRINE
FALCON also flew past.

I had nice side-by-side comparisons of Western and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER at
Helen's Pond (the "horse pond") near 3 Crabs. There was also a NORTHERN
SHOVELER, which struck me as odd for early August.

Mid-morning, while the tide was still well out, I had 650+ RHINOCEROS AUKLET
off Port Williams.

I got to watch a juvenile CASPIAN TERN being fed on the tide flats off 3
Crabs. Sibley shows just sort of a dingy coloration of the mantle on
juveniles, but what caught my eye was how boldly the individual feathers
were marked. Quite striking.

There were 12+ TURKEY VULTURES a half-mile inland from 3 Crabs (Diann - do
you copy?)

Finally, I saw 6 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS over the highway in Jefferson County as I
headed back towards Kingston.
