Your daughter is already far ahead of most adults, who seem only to
recognize crows and robins. My daughter is three and can identify all
of the usual backyard birds for this area; she made me proud a few
months ago when she ran outside and halted, exclaiming, "Listen to the
House Finch! How beautiful!" And it was indeed a House Finch! She,
too, is ahead of most adults around here as she never, ever calls a
Steller's Jay a "blue jay". 8-)

A book that everyone might enjoy with their children or grandchildren is
"Our Nest" by Reeve Lindbergh. It's not about birds, although it does
have a nice picture of Red-winged Blackbirds, but is heavy on nature and
our place within the universe. I think most birders or nature-lovers
would like it, and it makes for great bedtime reading.
