Subject: [Tweeters] Marymoor Park Report (Redmond, King Co., WA) 2005-08-10

Tweets - it felt like fall yesterday - rather cold, breezy, dark, and quiet.
Not many birds were out and visible, though our species count was OK. The
count of birders was really rather good, considering - 9 people (including
Matt Bartels, recently returned from China - welcome back).

Highlights:

Green Heron One at the weir
Osprey Saw at least 4, nest still active
Cooper's Hawk East end of Snag Row; juvenile
Blue-winged Teal Eight flew in a circle, then south
Spotted Sandpiper Two (spotless) at the weir
Barn Owl Matt saw one early
R-b Sapsucker Juvenile west of mansion
Willow Flycatcher A few. Whit call only; no songs
P-s Flycatcher One from bend in boardwalk (maybe another)
Yellow Warbler Male at lake platform
B-t Gray Warbler Male (hatch year?) at Rowing Club
Wilson's Warbler Young male at lake platform

I also made a stop at the 187th St access of East Lake Samm Parkway to view
the NE corner of the lake. No martins, but I did find two female
GREEN-WINGED TEAL. Other bonus birds there were HOUSE SPARROWS (otherwised
missed), and the day's only BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD, being fed by a
SONG-SPARROW.

In the parking lot at the east end of the park, I watched a young RED-TAILED
HAWK trying to catch a SPOTTED TOWHEE. Needless to say, it didn't have a
chance. The towhee saw it coming and just flew into the blackberries.

We had no vireos, tanagers or grosbeaks, no Swainson's Thrush, no Tree
Swallow. While we had three species of warbler plus COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, we
also only had 3 individual warblers plus COYEs.

For the day, 54 species. Ollie had HOODED MERGANSER, PILEATED WOODPECKER,
and two BROWN CREEPER at the Rowing Club on Tuesday to bring the week total
to 57 species. The Pacific-slope Flycatcher was new for the year. The year
list is now 128 species.
