There has been a thread on keeping crows as pets. Here is the official word
from WDFW regarding the legal status of crows in Washington.

"crows are in fact covered under the migratory bird treaty act, (no lawful
live posession) but they are also included in the federal framework
discussion for adoption of formal seasons. Washington has both a formal
recognized crow season as well as a depredation clause that allows crows to
be taken during the act of depredation. finally, since crows are indeed
defined as wildlife of the state, then they are also prohibited by the state
to be kept in captivity as live wildlife."

Bottom line: not legal for anyone in any state to keep crows as pets unless
they have some special permit from the USFWS and likely their own state.
The book the woman wrote is not accurate on this issue.
