Here the goodies of a 3-day mid-week trip starting in the Moses Lake area
late on Monday 08/15, continuing via the Okanogan Highlands to the Paysaten
Wilderness at Horseshoe Basin and ending at the Eightmile Ck (FR5130) north
of Winthrop. Thanks to Ned McGerry for the inspiration for two of the
important stops I made.

Stilt Sandpiper (3 at Lind Coulee on 08/16, 6 at Soap Lake on 08/16)
Pectoral Sandpiper (1 at Lind Coulee on 08/16)
Baird's Sandpiper (10+ at Perch Point on 08/15)
Semipalmated Sandpiper (10+ at Perch Point on 08/15)
Forster's Tern (2 at Perch Point on 08/15)
Wilson's Phalarope (2 at Perch Point on 08/15)
Red-necked Phalarope (1 at Perch Point on 08/15)
Solitary Sandpiper (3 at Perch Point on 08/15; 1 at Muskrat Lake and 2 at
Baker Lake on 08/16 - both Okanogan Highlands, see DeLorme p.115 A/B7)
Eared Grebe (500+ at Soap Lake on 08/16)
Burrowing Owl (3 off SR17 between Moses Lake and Soap Lake at MP69.8, 1 more
at MP71.6 on 08/16)
Red Crossbill (~15 overhead along FR3230 - Highlands Sno-Park area in
Okanogan Highlands on 08/16)
Gray Partridge (~10 near church in town of Havilah in Okanogan Highlands on
08/16)
Williamson's Sapsucker (1 along FR3230 about 2.5mi south from intersection
FR3230 & FR260 on 08/16; 1 along FR5220 at 2.9mi - Eightmile Ck drainage
north of Winthrop on 08/18; 1 at Forest Discovery Trail parking lot -
Blewett Pass on 08/18)
Great Gray Owl (1 along FR3230 - Highlands Sno-Park area in Okanogan
Highlands on 08/16)
Ruffed Grouse (1 female with 1 chick 13.0mi into FR5130 - Eightmile Ck
drainage north of Winthrop; another female was 0.5mi further down the road;
both on 08/18)
Blue Grouse (1 male about 2mi from Iron Gate trailhead - Horseshoe Basin,
Paysaten Wilderness on 08/17)
Boreal Chickadee (~20 on ascent to Windy Pass - Horseshoe Basin, Paysaten
Wilderness on 08/17; Ned, you are going to hate me for this one ...)
Three-toed Woodpecker (2 at first cattle guard off FR500 en route to Iron
Gate north of FR39 east of Loomis, 7 on ascent to Windy Pass - Horseshoe
Basin, Paysaten Wilderness; all on 08/17)
Northern Pygmy-Owl (1 incessantly calling bird just NW of FLat CG off FR5130
north of Winthrop on 08/17)
Evening Grosbeak (~3 birds calling near Ruffed Grouse CG off FR5130 north of
Winthrop on 08/18)
Lewis's Woodpecker (2 going up FR39 just west of Loomis on 08/17)

Again, I dipped on Spruce Grouse. One of the many highlights was when I was
corned (literally!) by 4 Sharp-shinned Hawks hear the trailhead to Copper
Glance Lake off FR5130. This was obviously a family and the birds were
calling out to each other non-stop. One bird even made a dive at me, enough
for me to back out the way I came.
