Bird Alert for Friday, August 26 sponsored in part by the Wild
Birds Unlimited stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver.

The rare bird alert continues for the WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER.
Other featured birds include a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and a
WANDERING TATTLER

The first Birder's Night of the season will be on Thursday September 1
at 7:30 PM at St Mary's (Kerrisdale) Anglican Church 37th and Larch,
Vancouver.

The program will include a presentation on Taiwanese Birding by
Jo Ann MacKenzie, and an update on conservation issues of concern to
Birder's by June Ryder, a review of summer birding, the upcoming
Raptor Symposium, and details on the Raptor Survey starting in
September. We will also discuss other upcoming events and programs.
Nominations for the Birding Section Committee election in October
will also be held. Refreshments will be served.


Sightings for Friday, August 26

The WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was seen this evening on the rising tide
at the southeast sewage pond at Iona Island. Seen earlier in the day
at Iona, also in the southeast pond, was a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER. A
WANDERING TATTLER was also reported from Iona along the south jetty
on the south side just west of the first shelter.


Wednesday, August 24

An AMERICAN KESTREL was on the fence by Macdonald Road on Sea
Island, Richmond


Tuesday, August 23

2 SANDHILL CRANES were over 72nd Street in Delta, near the
Vancouver landfill.


Monday, August 22

A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was present all day at Iona Island,
Richmond and was last seen in the southeast sewage pond.


Sunday, August 21

An immature male AMERICAN REDSTART was seen at Deer Lake Park in
Burnaby at the southwest corner of the park, at the edge of woods
near the trail junction south of the glider field.

A SURFBIRD was seen near Berth One on the Tsawwassen ferry jetty and
a MARBLED GODWIT was at the compensation lagoon on the north
side of the jetty, located in Delta.

A BARN OWL was on the north fence of the north runway on Sea Island,
Richmond.


Saturday, August 20

3 STILT SANDPIPERS were in front of the mansion near the foot of
96th Street at Boundary Bay in Delta, and 4 RED KNOTS and 300
SANDERLINGS were with a flock of BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS there.

2 WILSON'S PHALAROPES were at the foot of 72nd Street in Delta
on one of the golf course ponds.


Friday, August 19

An UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen and heard along 96th Street at 07:30
over a field east of 96th Street just south of the railway tracks. The bird
then landed in a field north of the tracks near a horse stable, which may
not be visible from the road.

Elgin Heritage Park in Surrey had 2 WILSON'S PHALAROPES and a
SOLITARY SANDPIPER in the east pond.
