Hi,
Nutria, very big rat like critters, have invaded parts of Skagit County.
They have been observed at Clear Lake, Mudd Lake and the Johnson/DeBay Swan
Reserve to name some specific sites. As a result, WDFW and the USDA are
working to trap them out as much as possible. Therefore, the Reserve is
temporarily closed to the public.
This issue is unfortunate as nutria dig into banks, undermine them as
well as undermine dikes.
They are native to South America, but were introduced in North America for
the fur trade. They were not successful for the fur trade so many were
turned loose, a lot in Oregon. Now they seem to be here.
Please be patient. I will keep you informed of the status of the Reserve
and other areas as I get word.
