The swifts have returned to Monroe Elementary School in the 600 block of
West Main Street. I stopped by tonight on my way home from Evergreen State
Fair. This was just after 7:00 p.m. There were hundreds of birds circling and
dropping into the chimney. Seemed the more that dropped, the more there were
in the sky, they just kept arriving and dropping for nearly an hour.
Sometimes 20 or so would drop and the rest would kind of disburse and there would be
none over the chimney and then they would all gather again and more would
drop. Finally the numbers lessened and by 8:00 p.m. there were no birds in the
sky.

How do they do this? Where have they been all day? How do they know whose
turn it is to drop?

This is truly spectacular to watch.
