Hummers feed on small insects. Flower nectar and feeder syrup provide energy boost. Though I have only seen it in films, they will feed on some varieties of mahonia, and (I am speculating) may go to Oregon grape that flowers in winter. Where are you located?

In the winter, and most of the rest of the year, you are probably seeing Anna's. Rufous come north in early Spring and head south in late summer. I believe people see stragglers into early September. Our first Rufous was March 8th, but we saw fewer this year than last - perhaps because our resident Anna's have turned into real bullies.
