Hello, all.

We feed peanuts to the Steller's Jays (and, of course, Eastern Gray
Squirrels) every day, which is at least as much fun as a barrel of
monkeys. But the other day I noticed a Spotted Towhee run out from
under the hedge, grab a peanut, and disappear. Subsequently I've seen
presumably the same towhee come out after a peanut numerous times. I
usually try to throw a single to it, and it will run out on the lawn,
grab it, and disappear in the bushes. One day I watched it working on
it, so it is clearly eating them. This is something I hadn't seen or
suspected. Just now I threw out a handful of peanuts, causing mayhem
among at least 10 jays and 6 squirrels, and the towhee darted out and
got its peanut. Earlier I saw a flicker eat one (a peanut, not a
towhee), but that hasn't happened again.

Arachis is the genus of peanuts, by the way.
