Subject: Horned Lark RFI,and first notice of a conservation project that
needs your involvement

Greetings OBOLers and TWEETERers,

It's that horned lark time of year again. In an effort to thoroughly
understand the wintering range of our very own (sort of)endangered
streaked horned lark, I'm again requesting information on sightings of any
horned larks west of the Cascades, anywhere in the valleys and coastal
areas of Washington, Oregon, and B.C. If you run across any larks in this
region, if you would jot the date and location in an e-mail and send it my
way, I'd be greatly appreciative (and so would the larks).

And in other lark news, we here at the Oak Creek Laboratory of Biology (at
OSU) are in the beginning stages of planning an all out survey assault on
the breeding range of streaked horned larks in the approaching breeding
season. It's crucial that we delineate the entire breeding range for
these guys and get a solid estimate of their population size so that we
have something to compare with results of future surveys once our
restoration efforts begin.

And since some of these guys probably breed in a field near you, and
because we can't possibly cover the entire breeding range adequately
ourselves, we need your help! We are envisioning a series of breeding
bird survey style driving counts, focused on the western Oregon and
Washington (west of the cascades), including the Rogue and Umpqua Valleys
in Jackson Co., OR. We will provide training and gratitude for those of
you who'd like to contribute to the recovery of this beautiful Pacific
Northwest endemic subspecies.

If a couple of mornings of surveying for larks (in a ~25 sq. mile block
near your home) over the course of the breeding season appeals to you,
contact me at the info provided below and I'll add your name to the list
of prospective volunteers, and I'll keep you up to date with the
developments as they happen. The project's web page will be up soon and
I'll also steer you toward that for more information once we get it up and
running.

cheers,
Randy
