Subject: [Tweeters] Snowy Owl at Discovery Park

Discovery Park is very fortunate to be a temporary haven for a snowy owl
this winter. Its close proximity to a large population of people has
allowed many fortunate birders, and soon to be birders an opportunity to
see this magnificent bird up close. Unfortunately many people are
showing a lack of respect for the owl and the federal property upon
which it is roosting. Park personnel are unable to monitor the bird and
people's behavior throughout the day. With the strength of the birding
community perhaps the Tweeters audience can help ease this situation -
please monitor your own behavior and that of others around you. jRemain
on city of Seattle lands while watching and photographing the snowy do
not go onto federal lands. If the residents in the historic officer
quarters ask you to leave please do. If overly enthusiastic people
continue to trample on lawns, invade privacy and show an utter lack of
respect the concern for people's homes the residents may be tempted to
take out their frustrations on the owl.
To poorly paraphrase David Sibley "the snowy owl is the thread that
connects Seattle to the arctic". Together as a birding community we can
protect and enjoy this owl and maintain this connection with the arctic
wilderness.
