I stopped by the Narbeck Wetlands Sanctuary (Seward Ave in Everett) around 11:30 a.m. today. It was very unbirdy (I didn't even see a chickadee!) with the exception of a handsome pair of Hooded Mergansers (male and female) on the large pond near the parking lot entrance. They swam out in the open for excellent viewing and made the stop worthwhile!

Also present was a Bufflehead, either a 1st winter male or a female. It had the diagnostic oval white patch - I would call it a large thick comma - and also white on the wings showed, even though not in flight, as a thin line on each side. Before today I don't think I have ever seen the white wing feathers in one not in flight.

The large flock of Surf Scooters was still at the Mukilteo ferry dock this morning.

Best of Birding,
Judy
