Hello All,
Today a little after noon MerryLynn spotted the Snowy Owl first reported and
photographed by Dennis Rockwell's brother -in-law on 8 Dec. along Burggraff
Rd. in Umatilla Co., Oregon. Today however this very dark HYB was 190 meters
north of Stateline Rd. in Walla Walla Co., Washington. This bird was seen by
many folks from this area and was Walla Walla Co. bird #299 for MerryLynn
and I. This bird is west along Stateline Rd. just beyond MP 5. I placed some
blue bailing twine on the fence line along the road that marks the site
where MerryLynn spotted the owl. Look north to the lone fence post at the
far side of the alfalfa field. This Snowy is mostly black save for a white
face. It is without a doubt the darkest Snowy Owl I have ever seen. It looks
more like a version of the Greater Hawk Owl than a Snowy Owl. Also this
afternoon we located 7 Barn Owls and two Great Horned Owls along Short Rd.
in Walla Walla Co.. It is gray, foggy and cold, but great owling weather!!!
Later Mike
