Dear Tweeters,

While driving past State Highway 20 mile marker 100 on
December 11, I noticed some eagle watchers at the
pullout there. This is just west of Cascadian Farms
stand, between Rockport and Marblemount (Skagit
County). The eagle watchers were looking at the
eagles, but a flock of 42 Glaucous-winged Gulls caught
my eye. With them was an immature GLAUCOUS GULL. I
don't know of any records of this species so far up
the Skagit. Indeed, it was the first time I'd seen one
away from agricultural land. The birds were loafing on
the cobbled bank, and bathing in the river.

Nearby were 30 or more Bald Eagles, easily viewed.

At the Van Horn Ponds, just west of the Jackman Creek
turnoff from SR 20, there was a MARSH WREN. It was the
first one I had ever found upriver during wintertime.
It was in the field across the road from the llama
pasture.

Good birding!

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
