On 6 Dec Doug Schonewald found a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER at Perch Point on
Potholes Reservoir in Grant Co WA. The same day he observed a first winter
THAYER'S GULL along O'Sullivan Dam. To get to Perch Point (aka Medicare
Beach) from I-90 in Moses Lake, take exit 179. Turn south on WA 17 and go
about 1 mile, then turn right onto Road M SE. Drive about 6 or 6.5 miles and
turn right onto Road 6 SE. Go west about 3 miles. Here the road goes up a
steep hill and turns sharply right amongst a village of trailer houses. Just
past this sharp right, turn left onto an unimproved dirt road toward
Potholes Reservoir. Continue on to the gravel pit (aka Perch Point or
Medicare Beach). Right on the bottom of WA DeLorme 69, 6 and 7 or right at
the top of page 53, 6 and 7.

A SNOWY OWL is residing between Walla Walla Co WA and Umatilla Co OR. Dennis
Rockwell's brother-in-law spied the bird on 8 Dec along Burggraff Road in
Umatilla Co. On 11 Dec Mike and MerryLynn Denny report the hatch-year bird
was west along Stateline Road in Walla Walla Co, just past mile marker 5,
about 600 feet north of the road. The Denny's put some blue twine on the
fence in the general area. The next day the bird was south of Stateline, in
Umatilla Co, about an eighth of a mile further west.

On 10 Dec a flock of birders found 2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the Clearwater
River in Lewiston, Nez Perce Co ID. The birds were in their usual spot near
the Terminal 2 grain towers. Also in the valley was a single EURASIAN
WIGEON. Thanks to Terry Gray for reporting. This area can be viewed from the
levee on the south side of the river-use any of the parking lots along the
US 12 bypass.

Good birding.
