I'm asking for:
"The Ghost With Trembling Wings" by Scott Weidensaul. A book about
"science, wishful thinking, and the search for lost species".

"North American Owls" by Jim Burns - I don't know much about this
book, but it sounds like a good family overview [and comes w/ a cd]

Some books I've read relatively recently that I'd recommend for
birders on your list:
"The Singing Life of Birds" by Donald Kroodsma - good essays on
various aspects of birdsong and especially good on providing a lay
presentation of the studies developed to learn about songs and from
songs.

"Birds of Tropical America" by Steven Hilty - I've never been to
tropical America, and don't have a trip planned, but I am enjoying
this book because it is organized around themes that explain how the
bird life of the tropics is organized, not how to id birds. It
explains the dynamics at work in mixed species flocks, talks about
colorful plumage, various hummingbird adaptations, foraging
strategies of Antbirds....

"The Song of the Dodo: Island Biogeography in an Age of Extinctions"
by David Quammen - a great book that describes various developments
in the theories of how new species come about and how species become
extinct. It covers a lot of ground, including interesting
descriptions on how the founding scientists of evolutionary thinking
- Darwin and especially Wallace, came up with their ideas. The detour
this book took me on through exotic island locales provided great
context for better understanding the implications of fragmented
forests and other habitat here in North America.

Looking forward to some other suggestions - I've yet to begin my shopping....
