I response to Ian's question about books for birders, Scott Weidensaul's new
book "Return to Wild America: a search for the Continent's Natural Soul."
I've just finished and like Weidensaul's other books is wonderful. This
book is essentially a 50th anniversary tribute to Peterson and Fishers
classic "Wild America" -- the book that led to the Big Year idea, although
this was certainly not the intent of the authors. If you've read "Wild
America", you know the book is not only about birds and birding, but a
series of wonderful profiles of those places in North America that were
still "wild" in 1953 (Newfoundland to Florida, to S. Texas, to the Sierra
Madre Oriental of Mexico, to the Olumpic Peninsula finishing in the
Pribiloffs). In "Return to Wild America," there is certainly much for the
birder, but as Weidensaul visits those same places Peterson and Fisher
visited 50 years ago, we read about the degradation and destruction of many
of those previously "wild" landscapes. Weidensaul also visits some areas
not visited by Peterson and Fisher to round out this great read. I will be
giving several copies of this book as Christmas presents this year and I
hope some of you do as well.
