A friend of mine and I located three Black -backed woodpeckers along the
Columbia River north of the Gifford Ferry. Take Highway 25 north from
Highway 2 at Davenport. Go north 56 miles and turn left into the Gifford
Campground. Go to the northern most parking lot near the boat launch ramp.
The woodpeckers were in a (summer) burn area only about 100 yards northeast
of the parking lot. Also present were 3 Pileated, 2 N. Flickers, 10 +
Hairies, 1 Downy, White breasted Nuthatch, about a dozen Clark's
Nutctrackers.



Backtracking a little on Highway 25, at milepost 54, there was a flock of
ducks that included both Lesser and Greater Scaup.





Back in the Davenport area, there were 5 Snow Buntings along Valley Rd. To
reach this point, turn south on Rocklyn Rd (about 3 mi west of Davenport) go
south on Rocklyn Rd about 3 mi and turn right on Valley Rd. The snow
buntings were about four mi down this road, but all along this road is often
good for snow buntings.



Did not locate a snowy owl that I had seen last week on the corner of
Rocklyn and Old Kuchs Rd.
