Hello, Thought I'd throw at least a short blurb on here regarding Sunday's
Olympia area Christmas count. It was my 18th season doing the "downtown"
portion of the count and I added one new species and one "sub-species" to my
personal tally; there was a Swamp Sparrow at the south end of Capital Lake
and a "Eurasian" Green-winged Teal just below (north of) Tumwater Falls. My
climb up the steeple of the Boundary Street church confirmed that Barn Owls
persist there and Sir Bill Shelmerdine's group found an American Tree
Sparrow at Nisqually NWR, as well as 4 Snowy Owls. I believe the total for
the count came to 126 species, though that could conceivably grow by one or
two. Large numbers of waterfowl persist at Capital Lake; a sight to
behold.....come see!
