Birds in the News, the Christmas Edition, is now
available. It features a lovely photograph of a tufted
titmouse by Doris Dunrauf. This photo won the 2005
WildBird amateur photo contest and Doris was kind
anout to provide permission to me to use it. There are
plenty of other bird stories also, such as a story
that describes a study that seeks to explain the
decline in European populations of House Sparrows; the
female Christmas Island frigatebird, Lydia, who flew
2,500 miles to search for food for her chick; and the
joys of birding in the nude. I also am linking to CBC
news stories, so please send any links that you find
to me so I can include them in the next issue of Birds
in the News.

I also want to mention that I was honored to learn
that my readers nominated Scientific Life for several
2005 Koufax blog awards, including "Best Single Issue
Blog", "Best Expert Blog" and "Best Writing". Several
essays were nominated for the "Best Individual Post"
category. You will especially be interested to know
that Birds in the News was specifically nominated for
the category, "Best Series". I will make an
annoucement soon (via email and also on Scientific
Life) as to when voting begins for the "Sandy Awards"
so you all can cast your votes in support of
