Interesting to hear what Jerry Ligouri, an excellent hawk guy, has to say about light morph Harlan's. However, if one looks at the photos of these birds in Wheeler's western hawk guide, you'll see that they have extensive white on the head, much like a Krider's.

Also of interest, a hawk watch this spring, well within the range of Harlan's in AK, showed a ratio of ~20:1 dark:light morph. Don't know how well this translates to the taxon's range as a whole, but that is similar to my experience in WA.
