Subject: [Tweeters] Red Phalarape at Vashon Island

Two Red Phalarope were seen by a number of observers today in outer Quartermaster Harbor near Burton on Vashon Island. First, spotted by Walter, a visitor to the island, who called me and gave a heads up. Thanks, Walter, I should have got your full name and contact info. I called Sue Trevathan who found it quickly and gave me a call. Walter saw two up close at about 30 yards, we had one out about 100 yards or so in choppy waters. It flew several times but gave us some good looks over time. All previous Vashon sightings. Vashon's previous four sightings in my database all consist of birds seen in Puget Sound off ferries or fishing boats. This is the first for Quartermaster Harbor. If anyone has sightings of them within a mile or so of Vashon's shore, I'd be interested in the data, plus any other sightings of normally pelagic species.

Still no Vashon Snowy Owls this year. Last sighting is over 50 years old.
