Howdy,
The Snowy Owl at Ediz Hook was seen Sat., Dec. 24 at about 2:30 and 4:30 in the afternoon, by two separate groups that I know of. It was 50 yards past the fence of the Coast Guard reserve, perched as usual on rocks at the north side of the landing area.
I was unable to locate the bird on the previous weekend, and thought it had moved on, or moved to the far end of the Coast Guard. Their portion of the spit is about a mile long, I believe.
For those interested in the odd ... we saw sanderlings, dunlins, and black turnstones dining shoulder to shoulder with sparrows and starlings at the birdseed pile just west of the boat ramp restrooms. Couldn't tell if they were actually shelling the seeds or gobbling them whole. I know a couple of these spp. will eat seeds at certain times, but it's something else to see them acting like the crowd at my feeder.
