Hello,
Can anyone help me with some questions about Anna's Hummingbirds?
I bird Wallace Swamp Creek Park in Kenmore ( and adjacent Kenmore
Elementary) several times a week. There are four spots that I can count
on seeing an Anna's. Each is a tall branch from which the birds defend
their territory. I often see display flight or "dog fights" near these
spots and I have thought that there are at least 4 males in the park
each with a territory staked out. On Christmas day I was able to approach
one bird quite closely and got a pretty good picture of him. As I studied
the photo I noticed he has white spots on his wing. I believed this to be
a uniquely marked individual. Today I saw a "dog fight" near where I
photographed that bird. Later I was at the school and I saw a bird with
white spots on his wing, perched on a branch that I had thought was
another bird's. I'm sorry this is so drawn out. my questions are:
1. How big is the territory of Anna's Hummingbirds?
2. Is the territory what they can see from their perch?
3. Is the white spot I saw on the wing truly a unique mark ?( E-mail me
off- list and I'll show you the picture)
4. Does one bird stake out more than one territory?
none of this would make any difference to me except unlike my daily
visits where I record the species I see I will be helping with the CBC
this Saturday at WSCP.
