This morning I saw (and heard) a male Downy Woodpecker drumming on the top
of a dead alder, the 1st of the year. A rival was drumming nearby. Neither
one seemed really dedicated to the task and both took frequent breaks. This
was in our yard here in Coupeville on Whidbey Island.
