Hello Tweets;
A fascinating part of natural history is the relationship between birds
and insects. I read lately in The Insect Guide that many ants are eaten
by birds (notably the flicker). A Red-breasted sapsucker is always
looking for black ants attracted to the sap wells in the trees around
our yard. But I have never seen a bird anywhere near the huge ant hills
that are built in the open forest nearby. These massive hills are
crawling with millions of ants (the front part of the ants bodies are
red; the back part it is a gray bulb with shinny black lines) that
would make an easy meal for any bird. Does anyone have any thoughts
about this? If anyone is interested I will send photos of the hills and
close ups of the ants.
Thanks;
