My dad and I took the dogs for a walk this morning at Hamlin Park (in
Shoreline, just a few blocks from the North Seattle city limits). When we first got
there I immediately heard a RAVEN. I heard it about three times. I didn't see
it but it sounded like it was just passing over the park. This is the closest
to my house (in north Seattle) that I have ever heard a raven. Farther along we
saw a large flock of PINE SISKINS that had been spooked by something. We
heard many Black-capped Chickadees and Red-breasted Nuthatches. Then I heard a
male ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD singing with it's buzzing song. We ran into some fellow
birders right after I heard the hummer and they pointed out a PILEATED
WOODPECKER hammering away in the trees. They had also heard the raven. We said our
good-byes and I turned around to see a BARRED OWL halfway up a Doug Fir, preening
its tail. We all watched it for a bit and then headed home after some neat
finds at the park.
