I was surprised to see two Tree Swallows on the first day of the new year. They were flying around above Scatter Creek where it crosses Mull St., about a mile east of Tenino. While Barn Swallows seem to have become regular in small numbers in recent winters, Tree Swallows typically begin returning in February.
