This morning, Jan. 4, at about 10 a.m. I saw a Tufted Duck On Phantom Lake
in Bellevue. It was a bright, sunny morning and I initially saw two very
white sided bird in the middle of the lake. I looked at the first and it
was a male Common Merganser. The second looked like a scaup until it turned
its head and I could definitely see a long tuft of feathers hanging down
from the back of the neck. It had very white sides and a black back. I went
back home to get my scope and camera to take photos. When I got back about
one hour later, I saw a fishing boat anchored in the area I had seen the
duck (I don't remember ever seeing anyone fishing in the lake in the
winter, but it was a beautiful day). Both the Tufted Duck and Common
Merganser were gone. Lake Sammamish is only about one mile away and it
could have gone there. So keep an eye out for a Tufted Duck on L. Sammamish.
