Sherry,
The best spot on the North Olympic is on the Elwha River Dike. They
usually outnumber the hybrid big pink-footed gulls, the light is behind you
and you are close enough to make out fine points. One trouble is that they
look like rump hybrids so if you can't find an adult hybrid for size
comparison you may be in trouble. Most people seem to have trouble with the
smaller bill and almost lacking gonydeal angle. Port Angeles Harbor can have
a lot but they usually are far enough away that you have to have Steve
Mlodinow's knowledge and skills to make them out.

We have a friend who is trying to find a Thayer's Gull for her life list
of over 500 species. Does anyone know where one might be hanging out this
year in the Portland-Vancouver area or even the coast...? or north of
here...?
