Sherry and Tweeters:
There is usually a loafing flock of Thayer's Gulls at Gog-Le-Hi-Te in the tideflats of Tacoma, just off of I-5. There is a writeup about this area in "A BIRDER'S GUIDE TO WASHINGTON" on page199, directions on map on pg 196. Take the Portland Ave exit from I-5, drive north on Ptld. Ave toward Puget Sound about 1/2 mile, and take a right on Lincoln Ave. Go past the bridge about 1 blk. Wetland is on the right.
When you arrive, there is a parking area either inside or outside a gate. As you look forward to the gate, look to the left across some RR tracks. There is a nearby metal bldg just on the other side of the tracks. I think it's green. Depending on tides on the river, the Thayer's flock and some hybrids may fly in and out onto that roof. Then look past that bldg and a little to the right about 3 blocks away. There is a rendering plant w/ smoke stacks, and lots of gulls. To reach it, drive a little farther east on Lincoln, and turn right on ___ street (I've forgotten it's name). Drive down that road to the end, and pull your car in there w/ the trucks, and parked employee vehicles to observe the gulls eating icky rendering things. It's quite the inspiring gulling experience. ;-)
Gulls can also be on the Puyallup River, and farther along in the Gog-Le-Hi-Te pond depending on the tide. See the map in the Birder's Guide to access that area. I saw a Slaty-backed Gull there a few years ago, on the bldgs near the Puyallup.

We have a friend who is trying to find a Thayer's Gull for her life list of over 500 species. Does anyone know where one might be hanging out this year in the Portland-Vancouver area or even the coast...? or north of here...?
