I almost hate to even post this for the bad luck that may follow, but it seems as if the Cooper's hawks that have been hunting this area seem to have given up for lack of food supply. It has been a little over a month now since I have seen any evidence in the presence of these hawks. The birds are returning, and now I have a nice little flock of 10-12 Purple Finches that visit my feeders on a very regular basis. The flocks of chickadees are returning, along with my old Nemesis, Ben Ladden, a House Sparrow that has plagued me for a year now. Even he was a welcome sight, although I wasn't so welcoming to him as I waved him away from the feeders again. Nice try, and I am sure he will be back. Juncos are fairly plentiful, a few sightings of Towhees, and a small mystery bird. And of course, the jays. Although they never did leave the area, they did change their time of arrival to the afternoons sometimes when the hawks were more plentifully abundant. Now they arrive faithfully around 8:00 am, check back off and on throughout the day, and are in general back to usual. Very few siskins, yet.
