Subject: [Tweeters] High Eagle counts on Skagit river this year

Some very cold students and I floated the Skagit River between Marblemount
and Rockport to count eagles. We counted 142 adults, and 101 immatures.
This is the highest count in 13 years. We probably undercounted given the
thick snow fall on the last 1/4 of the trip made viewing conditions
difficult. The magic moment of the trip was having a pair of adults
materialize out of the snow, flying upriver toward us, then going right
overhead the raft. The whoosh of their huge wings was amazingly loud in the
still, snowfilled air. One of my students captured my educational
philosophy perfectly when he said, you know reading about them in books is
one thing but seeing them so close, is like, wow.
