Hello Tweets and other birders,

The Redwing at Olympia was well present this morning along Thomas Street just north of 4th Ave. from 8am-10am,then a short observation at the same location this afternoon from 2:30pm-3pm. The morning observation of the Redwing was the most apparent with up to 20 observers that obtained great looks at the bird,as the bird moved from a Holly tree to several different deciduous trees,as well as a Snow Bush,where the bird was first detected. A fairly good flock of Am.Robins was also present at the same location,but the Redwing seemed to tend to itself. The bird would often roost at a lengthy time in one of 3 separate locations and offer great views and at close views the salmon-rusty/brown tones appeared on the lesser coverts near the bird's shoulder. The bird was briefly observed on the ground at the corner of 4th Ave. and Thomas Street,but quickly flew up to the deciduous trees,where most everyone saw the bird. Near the end of the morning observation the bird flew into deciduous trees within an alleyway just west of Thomas Street,then to another alleyway between Decatur and Milroy Streets,but then quickly cutback and flew east towards Rogers Street,where the bird could not be relocated.

At 2:30pm the Redwing reappeared along Thomas Street just north of 4th Ave.,where it was viewed by 5 birders,as it perched with up to 2 Am.Robins in a tall cherry tree,then the 2 Am.Robins flew off to an unknown location leaving the Redwing perched alone in that same tree. At 2:50pm the Redwing dropped into a Holly clump viewed from the same location to apparently roost. It was briefly noted hopping around in that tree until 3pm. Throughout the day birders were noted from Oregon and British Columbia,as well as many local Washington birders. The Common Redpoll was observed coming to a feeder with Pine Siskins(during the mid afternoon before 2pm)in the alleyway between Cushing and Milroy Streets south of 4th Ave. The bird was only noted by a Portland,Oregon birder as to pass on his sighting for those that are interested. Other species of note in the general vicinity during the day included the following:

1 Cooper's Hawk
1 Merlin
5-6 Western Scrub Jays
1-2 Townsend's Warblers
10 Am.Goldfinches
