This is certainly an unfortunate incident, especially in light of the fact
that the local residents have been very welcoming of birders seeking to view
this wonderful bird. I've viewed the bird on numerous occasions and had
residents (non-birders) of the neighborhood tell me stories of their experiences or
ask me whether I'd seen the bird that day. The mail carrier in that section
of town is quite delightful in his recounting of experiences of the birders
he's encountered. The local newspaper has had numerous articles regarding this
bird, including the most recent one which discussed the influx of birders
and the attendant economic value to the community. My sense is that the
offender is not even a member of this community.

So, the bottom line is that all birders are welcome to view birds here. They
should, of course, be following the birding code of ethics. For those who
can't recall them, they're available on-line at the WOS website. Beyond that,
personal etiquette and cordiality should be elements of interactions with
other folks interested in birding, as you are.

At the very least this behavior requires an apology to those who were on the
receiving end of the verbal abuse. I regret that this incident took place in
our community and extend my welcome to birders everywhere.
