Someone asked me if I could give a better estimate than "dozens and
dozens" of murrelets flying past Point Wilson yesterday.

I didn't keep count - too much happening - but in the hour and a half I
was there, I got a pretty good idea of their rate of passage. I would
say in that period I saw about 50 Marbled and about 500 Ancient
Murrelets flying by from left to right. I have no idea what the cycling
time of these birds was; in other words, for how long do they float
downcurrent before they fly back up. So I can't estimate the
probability of my having seen the same bird twice (or more). If one
knew the current speed and the extent of their foraging range, that
could be estimated. It was a lot of murrelets.....and the fact that I
saw only a few murres and no grebes in that time seemed very odd.
