Tweeters and Whatcom Birders,

On January 15, an AMERICAN AVOCET was seen at Blaine by members of a
White Rock and Surrey (B.C.) Naturalists field trip, including Jo Ann
and Hue MacKenzie and Peter Thompson. The bird was seen on the north
side of Marine Drive, along the shore of Semiahmoo Bay, from the first
picnic shelter.

This is probably the same avocet which was present from late October
or early November through at least January 10 at the mouth of the
Serpentine River on Mud Bay, B.C.-- only a few miles north of Blaine.

Avocets are extremely rare in Whatcom County. "Birds of Whatcom
County: Status and Distribution" (1995) by Terry Wahl cites only two
records for the county, one in 1975 and one in 1992.
