Tweeters,
Since I did not see that anyone had posted a report for yesterday, thought
I'd put out a short note. About 12 people assembeld yesterday morning at
the Kent Ponds to look for the Baikal Teal, beginning about 0800. Part of
the group went to the south observation tower (where there is a roof!).
While a few of us stayed to scan the central channel. About the time I had
nothing dry left to clean my optics with I joined the group at the tower.
Shortly afterwards Bruce LeBar picked out the Baikal from the tower
loacation as it swam out from the vegetation on the right side of the open
water. It swam back in before most could see it, but fortunately swam back
out to mid channel shortly. This was just a bit before 1000. After almost
2 more hours of searching, it reappeared from the same area, swam out to mid
channel, then out and around the point to the right and out of view. This
was shortly before noon. After this most of us left the site. It was
pretty much constant rain throughout the time we were there.
So in summary, the bird was seen 2 times before noon, with about 4 hours of
searching. Total time the bird was in the open (and seen) was less than 10
minutes, probably closer to 5.
Cheers and good birding.
