Sunday, January 9, 2:33 PM. This is Cynthia Fabian in Seattle, 206-760-1436,
Sunday, January 9 at 2:30 PM. The BAIKAL TEAL was sighted today at the Kent
Ponds. It was sighted by Ted Robinson and Greg Brets of Florida and myself.
We watched it from 10:00 AM until about 1:30. You can see, or we saw the teal
from the Southeast observation tower, looking to the Northeast across the
pond, on the far shore, between the patch of red twig dogwood and the dead
cattails. It was close to shore, kind of in and out of the weeds there, preening
with other green teal. Good luck.
Monday, January 10, 12:41 PM. Hi, this is Ryan Merrill, reporting from the
Kent Ponds. Phone number 425-246-3251. Just before noon today we had the
BAIKAL TEAL, seen from southeast tower, in the general vicinity of where it was
reported from yesterday. There is one small section of reeds, or cattails, that
you can see looking north, northeast or so. The channel was sitting on the
bank slightly to the left of this, farther out. And then was flushed by a
HARRIER and the ducks are moving around quite a bit now. That's it. Good luck.
Tuesday, January 11, 3:14 PM. Hi, this is Jim Aults. My number is
360-873-4161. It is January the 11th. I was just birding on Fir Island, on the dike
trail when I had a small flock of about 6 COMMON REDPOLL mixed with some PINE
SISKINS, and 1 SWAMP SPARROW. That's about it. Good luck. Good birding.
Thursday, January 13, 1:33 PM. HI, this is Alan Knue, at 206-619-6584. I am
at the Kent Ponds and we just saw the BAIKAL TEAL. I was with Michael Hobbs
and a few other birders. We had a really great look at the bird as it swam
about and rested. It's location is in a channel that kind of heads north between
the Southeast tower and the grassy knoll. So if you park at the building
with the blue trim, just go to, a little bit to the right and you will see the
channel that is heading north. The bird was seen approximately at, I believe
about 1:00. So, once again, the BAIKAL TEAL is still at the Kent Ponds. Had a
great look at it. That's it. Good birding.
Thursday, January 13, 2:02 PM. HI, this is Steven Mlodinow. It is 2:00 on
the 13th. Just had a BEWICK'S SWAN on Skagit City Road, just north of Paulson
Road, on Fir Island. This bird looks identical to the bird that was present
last year and it is almost certainly the same individual. Good luck and good
birding.
Friday, January 14, 12:06 PM. HI, this is Brad Wilson, 845-3216, area code
253. Today at the Kent Ponds at about 11:30 the BAIKAL TEAL was spotted again
by about 26 birders. It was spotted in the same location as yesterday, which
is the canal between the grass knoll and the Southeast tower. The bird was
hiding behind a log to the left-hand side of the canal. It came out on the
grass knoll. it stayed out in the open for about 10 minutes then went back
inside. It is now 12:00 and I'm heading home. There are still a lot of birds there
so there is still a good possibility to see it. Good luck and good birding.
Saturday, January 15, 10:28 AM. Hi, this is Steven Mlodinow. The BAIKAL TEAL
was present this morning from about 8:00 to 9:00, and perhaps quite later.
It was still there when we left, at the Kent Ponds, seen from the observation
tower. Also present was the GADWALL/MALLARD HYBRID. Good luck and good
birding.
Sunday, January 16, 11:37 AM. Hi, this is Bob O'Brian from Portland. I came
up to see the BAIKAL TEAL which was visible for an hour or more from the
tower. About 15 minutes ago, a little before 11:00 it flew back into the marsh,
when a lot of ducks took off, so it's still in there somewhere.
Sunday, January 16, 2:05 PM. This is Rachel Lawson, BirdBox System
Administrator, with an update on some of the notable birds in Western Washington right
now. The BAIKAL TEAL is still present at the Kent Ponds. Listen to the next
message for details. the REDWING is still present in Olympia. The TUFTED DUCK
is still present in Bellevue on Phantom Lake and the BLUE JAY is still
present in Port Hadlock. That's it. Good birding.
Monday, January 17, 11:38 AM. Good morning, this is Brian Bell,
425-485-8058. The BAIKAL TEAL was seen down at the Kent Ponds area this morning at 9:40
and at 11:20. Both times it was viewed from the Southeast tower looking toward
the Northeast, basically in back among the willows and then swimming out.
Pretty wet day but got decent looks at it the second time through. Good
birding.
Monday, January 17, 5:35 PM. This is Michael Flemming, 206-297-3234. Sorry
this report is a little old. Went birding yesterday, Sunday, with Stefan
Slick. In the morning we stopped by the Kent Pond and saw the BAIKAL TEAL. In the
afternoon we headed up to the Skagit Flats and located the BEWICK'S SWAN that
was reported by Steven Mlodinow last week. It was at the same location that
he reported on Skagit City Road just north of Paulson Road, on Fir Island.
After that we went to the Skagit Game Refuge and had an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER
and a female COMMON YELLOWTHROAT on the dike right near the headquarters.
Thank you very much. Good luck and good birding.
