I've led many field trips with little kids. The 2 things to watch for: the
effect of the optics weight and eye strain. Both occur pretty quickly in
young children. I've found it best to let them spot a bird (they have
amazing powers of observation and lightning quick reflexes) and then hand
them the binos.
It's also good if they want to stop and examine a snail or flower or
mushroom. Sometimes we adults get so focused on birds that we forget the
attention span of kids who are inherently interested in everything. If only
we didn't lose that as adults!!!
