I made a rushed trip to the Iona Jetty today, my first visit to the place. I
parked by the jetty and pedaled my mountain bike along the access road,
with my scope and tripod in my backpack, and my binos around my neck. It
made for an awkward ride, but the weather was relatively dry, warm and calm,
skies quite overcast. No buntings, and no birds out of the ordinary: surf
scoters, horned grebes, pelagic cormorants, Barrow's goldeneyes, snow geese,
Canada geese, common loons, red breasted mergansers, bald eagles. But I did
find a number of purple martin boxes near the ponds, some looking rather old
and weathered; I'll have to check them out in the summer some time.
