Well that is the weird thing with hummers. Sometimes they appear where they aren't "supposed" to be. during the summer back east, you only hear about Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, as that is the only species that supposedly occurs over most of the east. However, during the winter, there are sorts of reports for Allen's, Rufous, Calliope and others, but all of the Ruby-throat's have migrated south. Some of these birds just seem to migrate east for whatever reason, because none of those species occurs in the east normally. But it is now becoming normal to see them every winter in the east, although in small, very scattered incidents. Likely, if what you have in your yard are definitely not Anna's (and you haven't offered any idea's or details to help others out with ID yet), it is a similar thing, and someone didn't migrate "right". Or at least what humans wouldn't consider as right. And that is thing with all of biology - seems nothing is 100%, everything is general. You can't !
say all
hummingbirds migrate south for the winter, but generally, you can say most all of them do. There will always be a few anomalies.
