Claire & tweets:

I admire Claire's accomplishments in getting out to see the birds while minimizing the ecological impact. I must admit to having contributed more than my share of exhaust chasing birds so certainly have no claim to be "greener than thou." It just seems that we all might keep closer tabs on the ecological cost of our hobby.

Paul Cozens raised a good point about birds seen while traveling on other business (count only the detour miles). And Aaron's point about mpg is also relevant. Without making the accounting task too complex, just tally up the miles each trip, divide by the number of passengers, subtract the "free miles," then divide miles traveled by the vehicle's mpg rating, and you'd have it: birds per gallon (bpg).

By the way, the examplary itinerary I sent last night could get you to all 39 counties!

Gene.

For the previous three years, I have spent my (hard-earned) vacation savings in Washington state - birding the western peninsula, west coast, North Cascades, Columbia River and the San Juans. I don't drive. I did it all by using the internet and putting together connections via Greyhound, transit and ferry - as well as walking - on my own. Thank you WSDOT. (And to the kind people who gave me a ride, once in a while.)And thanks to internet info it was incredibly cheap though rather prosaic and almost car-free.
I hope to hook up with some of you one day as I read the Tweeters group regularly.
