Hi all,

The classes and prizes aren?t worked out yet for 2nd Annual 2005 YardBirdRace, but it?s up and running anyway. Linda Davies of Sammamish is at 34 already! Anyone with an inclination in this direction is encouraged not only to start counting yardbirds (what you observe from your house or yard of less than 1.2 acres) but also to feel free to email me with interesting birds added, running totals, efforts to make your yard friendlier to birds, etc, at any time during the year. I?m hoping to put out a press release about the 2005 race in Feb, but will need some tight races and intense rivalries! (but no hooliganism please!).

The 2004 YardBirdRace received coverage in the Olympian, the Sammamish Review, and possibly the King County Journal. $900 in environmental donations ($150 thanks to matching donation from Don McVay) are going into the mail today in the name of five class winners to BirdLife International, American Bird Conservancy, and seven other organizations including local land trusts. Prizes are going into the mail this week including 5 subs to the Washington Birder, eight Violet Green Swallow nest boxes and three Russell Link landscaping books.

Thanks to all who participated and welcome to everyone even remotely thinking of participating in the huge extravaganza they call the 2005 YardBirdRace!

(Excuse, me on a coffee high) Ed Newbold, residential Beacon Hill, where a Sharpy recently got on the yardlist by taking a Robin off, so to speak. newboldwildlife at netscape.net

PS. Green Big Year Challenge is a great idea, and I'd also like to second Denny Grandstand's suggestion of trying to reimburse landowners for their trouble and kindness wherever possible. There is a yard people are free to enter in Portal AZ with a contribution jar, and it brings in enough money to help the resident bear with the constant attention.
