In a message sent yesterday, I stated that the Dusky Thrush in Langley
in 1993 was seen by more birders than any other individual bird in
B.C. history. This was true, up to that point in time. However, Nancy
Ladenberger reminded me of the Xantus's Hummingbird that was present
in Gibsons, BC for 10 months in 1997 and 1998.

I checked with Gerrie Patterson, owner of the yard where the hummer
remained for much of its stay. Gerrie and Lloyd kept a guest book, and
Gerrie says that about 1400 people signed the book. However, she was
sure that quite a few birders visited without signing the book. Also,
the hummer stayed in another nearby yard for the last several months
of its stay, and she figures that 300 or 400 birders must have seen it
there. So, Gerrie concluded that 2000 is probably a good estimate of
how many birders saw the hummer.

So Nancy-- I stand corrected! Thanks for reminding us about the
Xantus's Hummer.
